How I Backup My Sites

Yeah you gotta backup your sites and you have to do it properly. You need to do more than just saving it on your computer. I’ll tell you how I do it.

Making the backup

  1. I download all the files and databases to your computer.
  2. I zip everything and put a password on it. I use WinRAR to do this.
  3. Name the .zip file to something like “wr_oct-5.zip”. (Make sure you have the date on it!)
  4. I make sure that the .zip file isn’t corrupted by unzipping it and checking if everything is there.

Storing the backup

The biggest mistake I ever made was keeping all the backups on my laptop only and forgetting that someone could steal my laptop or my hard drive could crash. Please don’t do that or else you’ll get fucked! Trust me!

I started putting my backups on three different places. This way I’m safe if something goes wrong.

My server: Yes, my server itself. I make a folder where I just keep all the backups. Make sure you keep this folder at the root of your server where it can’t be accessed by the public.

On a CD: The old school way! I have a bunch of blank disks lying around, so why not burn the backups on it? Plus its not that expensive to buy blank CDs. Or if you want, you can just put them on a pen drive.

Online storage: I put one more copy on Windows Live SkyDrive. Don’t just trust any site with your precious little backups! Meaning don’t use shit like RapidShare and Megaupload.

How often do I backup?

The best way would be to backup everyday. But, that’s not possible. I’m just way too lazy to do that. I try to do it weekly. And sometimes randomly when I feel like doing it.

Some shared hosts back your stuff up daily, so consider yourself lucky if you’re on a shared hosting.

How about YOU?

Tell us how you do it! I wanna know how often you do it, where you store it and if you have any suggestions for us.

Come Up With Fresh Ideas

I’ll talk a bit about coming up with fresh ideas basically. Now I would say that its really hard to come up with something. Especially when you don’t know what you’re looking for. Its like trying to find a particular needle in a huge pile of needles.

Well I’ll always agree that “necessity is the mother of all inventions”. But what if there is no need for it or maybe there is a need for it, but no one thought of it yet. And that’s your opportunity. You must be able to think of something that someone already hasn’t thought of yet. That’s the highway to success.

Now I was just thinking of making a site. I wasn’t sure what to make it about. But I knew that I don’t want to make a site that somebody else has already made. An idea just popped up in my head. An online PHP editor. I thought that would be a neat idea. And therefore, I made EditPHPOnline.com.

There are ideas around you. You just have to look for them. Just look around and you’ll find great ideas. Don’t just make a carbon copy of someone’s else idea. But you could always take someone else’s idea and make it better.

Think of something cool. Not about money. Money will come with it.

Doomsday on the Web!

That’s right. The title says it all. The web is coming to an end. Its not going to be here forever. It will come to an end. But not right. I have just realized this. And I am not joking! The web will come to an end!

Let me explain before you think that I’m high or just another crazy ass motherf**ker. Okay we host our sites on servers. And those servers are usually big. Like really big. Some companies have big ass data centers. Now those servers are taking up space. Lots of space on earth. And we are getting new sites everyday. That means we need more servers to host the sites on.

And now a days, hosts give us a lot of space and bandwidth and a lot of us put loads of crap on it just to see if they actually have that much space or are they just overselling. And after we have uploaded it, we don’t delete it. This means that the host will need another server, eventually.

Well this goes on and on. Lots of sites. Servers getting filled to the max. Now is space on earth unlimited? The answer would be no. And so the amount of space servers/data centers can take up is limited. And we are getting pretty crowded. So do you get my point? We’ll run out of space for servers/data centers. And the web hosts will probably start overselling like crazy. Cramming and jamming lots of sites into one server. Plus the price to get a hosting account will sky rocket!

Now I don’t know what the solution would be. Like putting all the servers up on Mars or making tiny servers that can hold a few hundred terabytes. If this goes on. We will run out of space.

So, enjoy the web while you can!

Few tips!

  • Delete all the junk/crap from your hosting account or server.
  • If you have a shitty ass site then shut it down and terminate the hosting account.
  • Use the resources on your server reasonably.
  • Don’t upload unnecessary stuff on sites like YouTube, Tinypic, RapidShare, etc.
