Okay lets start with some basics. What is an offshore host? Well its a host whose servers are in a foreign country where the laws can’t reach you. You would obviously choose an offshore host if you were planning on doing something (lame and) evil. Copyright infrigement? Ring a bell?

Well here’s the part most people never thought of. What if the host scams you? What if the host just kicks you out? What if the host steals your files and databases? What if? And you know what sucks more? You can’t do anything about it! Remember, there are no laws for those stuff in that country?

Don’t forget the server specs and price. Here’s two things that could happen:

Hosted on a good server, but you get ripped off.

Hosted on a shitty, oversold server for cheap.

And what if the support people don’t speak English or can’t speak properly? Google Translate? Have fun!

Offshore hosting is just a little hype made up by noobs who make warez forums. I personally would suggest that you stay away from it. BTW, here’s a shared hosting checklist and 5 great shared hosting plans. Just trying to make it easier for you to find the perfect host!

There’s going to be some (semi) funny shit here. I’ll be going around, randomly talking with different hosts and see how they react to my questions and the things I say. Sounds awesome, huh? Yay! Lets do it!

BTW, these are real live chats. I didn’t modify them (except for taking out the unnecessary crap).

1. PowWeb

The hosting industry’s leading overseller with <sarcasm>a great support team</sarcasm> and the best sales reps (who can really lie). Take a look at the chat I had with their sales people (they know what they’re talking about).

Me: How can you provide unlimited space?
Virgil Shaw: It is decided by our Product Management team. <WTF?>
Me: No I mean. Its not possible for servers. There is a limit, right
Virgil Shaw: Yes, it is possible. <Woah breaking news!>
Me: Oh ok. Do you guys oversell?
Virgil Shaw: No. <How do they provide unlimited space then?>
Me: Oh ok. Do you guys suspend accounts for using too much space or having too many files?
Virgil Shaw: No.
Virgil Shaw: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Me: No. Thank you. You answered my questions. Powweb doesn’t oversell, your servers have unlimited space and you won’t suspend accounts.

Man these guys are great! They are the first host in the world to come up with servers that have unlimited space. Just amazing. How did they do that? Some kind of alien technology I guess (Area51 Sector-Powweb). They don’t even oversell. Well why would they need to oversell when their servers *really* have unlimited space.

2. BlueHost

Hmm BlueHost does not oversell. They have some crazy configuration on their server that allows them to provide unlimited space without overselling. How cool is that? They’ve also got a really courteous sales rep, Ann A. (she never closes the chat without asking if all questions were answered).

Me: How can you offer unlimited space?
Ann A.: Hi! We have several hard drives per server. the space is dynamically allocated between accounts. larger accounts share the server the server with less users than smaller accounts. <Oh really? Wow. So smart!>
Me: No I mean. Its not possible to give unlimited space. At least for $7
Me: Do you guys do overselling?
Ann A.: We are simply saying we won’t charge additional for extra bandwidth or storage used but it does have to be used in a responsible manner. We do not oversell. <Don’t lie to us! Frigin overseller!>
Me: Oh ok. So you do not oversell. Good to know that
Me: How much space and bandwidth falls under responsible manner? <An excellent question!>
Ann A.: Our cpu limit is 35% CPU for 30 seconds and we have a 20 concurrent process/connection limit. As long as the limits are not exceeded, there’s not limit for the amount of space and bandwith used. <Bit smarter than PowWeb’s rep.>
Me: Ok. Are you sure Bluehost doesnt oversell?
Ann A.: Yes, I’m sure.
Ann A.: Obviously, most customers do not come close to use the amount of space available. For those that do use the space available, they are moved to a server that is shared with less users, so the space that promised to them in their hosting package is available. <That IS overselling>
Me: Ok ok. So you guys don’t oversell <I smell a big fat lie>
Me: If we get closed because of using too much space. My friend will refer to you and take legal action against you, personally. <Lets freak her out>
Ann A.: ok, i understand. thank you! <How rude! Closed the chat right away. Nice sales rep, BlueHost>

These sales reps are awesome! Saying whatever they need to say to make you buy a hosting package. These guys are the teller marketers on the web. They lie just as much (maybe a bit more), they’re just as desperate, but they’re not as annoying as those teller marketers.

I hope you guys found it very educational. And don’t believe whatever those sales people tell you. You know why, right?

More like this coming up soon (that’s right!). And if you have anything like this then email me (I’ll credit you). Don’t forget to drop a comment and tell us what you thought of this.

Few weeks ago I wrote a shared hosting checklist. I thought why not make a list of few good hosting plans since its kinda impossible to find them. Well here it is. I’ve got 5 hosts that looks good to me and I would choose one of them if I needed shared hosting.

The 5 Hosts

These guys are not oversellers or resellers. They’re all big reputable hosts. I’ve called all the hosting companies for you guys and got all the info. Just making it easier for you. BTW, the list is in order of most affordable to the most expensive.

1. 1&1 Internet Inc – $3.99/month

2. GoDaddy – $4.29/month

3. Netfirms – $4.95/month

4. (mt) MediaTemple – $20/month

5. Mosso – $100/month

1. 1&1 Internet Inc

Space: 10GB

Bandwidth: 300GB

MySQL databases: 10 (100MB)

Domains allowed: 20

Concurrent users on database: 250 (just awesome)

Types of support: 24/7 Phone & Email support

Price: $3.99/month (Limited time offer: $1.99 for first 3 months)

My friend survived the “digg effect” with this shared hosting from 1&1. So its pretty reliable. And I was going to go with them myself, but later I got a VPS from GoDaddy. Great price, great plan. Just love it.

2. GoDaddy

Space: 10GB

Bandwidth: 300GB

MySQL databases: 10 (100MB)

Domains allowed: Unlimited

Concurrent users on database: 100

Types of support: 24/7 Phone & Email support

Price: $4.29/month

Some say that the support isn’t that great. I never used GoDaddy shared hosting so I can’t tell. I did find a lot of mixed reviews though. You might wanna someone who used GoDaddy before.

3. Nefirms

Space: 10GB

Bandwidth: 500GB

MySQL databases: 1 (100MB)

Domains allowed: Unlimited

Concurrent users on database: 7 (not good)

Types of support: 24/7 Phone & Email support

Price: $4.95/month

I like these guys. I buy all my domains from them. The support was great. I’m thinking the hosting would be great too. This plan from Netfirms would be only good for a small blog or a static site since its only got 1 database and 7 concurrent users.

4. (mt) MediaTemple

Space: 100GB

Bandwidth: 1000GB

MySQL databases: 1000 (400MB default)

Domains allowed: 100

Concurrent users on database: 40 (not bad)

Types of support: 24/7 Phone, Email & Support ticket

Price: $20/month

These guys are the pros. Most of the high-traffic sites use them. You’ll be hosted on a bunch of clustered servers. Meaning it can handle traffic spikes well. And about the big storage space and bandwidth. I’m not sure if they oversell. I don’t think they do because its $20/month, right?

5. Mosso

Space: 50GB

Bandwidth: 500GB

MySQL databases: Unlimited (no size limit)

Domains allowed: Unlimited

Concurrent users on database: 3000 (fucking awesome!)

Types of support: 24/7 Phone & Live chat

Price: $100/month

A big competitor to (mt) MediaTemple. They allow you to resell. They have everything ready for you to resell. Keep in mind that this is not for mass reselling (or for opening your own hosting site). Its good if you would like to sell hosting to your clients or friends. Its just great for a web developer or anyone with a high-traffic forum. Oh and you’ll be on clustered servers just like on (mt).

Yeah there’s the list. Hope this was helpful. See which host will be good for you. And if you know any good shared hosts then please share it with us.

Don’t forget to let us know which host you would choose!

Yeah everyone hates the downtime you have when you are switching web hosts. Its like visitors don’t have a clue about what’s going on and they leave. And it really sucks if you’re trying to sell something. Maybe you just turned away a potential client or customer.

First of all, never move your site at the last minute. For example, if your hosting is expiring in 4 weeks then start finding a web host. After you found a good hosting deal. Plan on moving your site 2-3 weeks before your hosting expires.

Time to move

Okay so its time to move your site. Download all the files and/or databases from your old host to your computer. And then upload them to your new host. Make sure that everything is running. If needed bring in a team of highly trained monkeys to do some testing.

Don’t delete the files

Wait! Don’t delete the files and databases on your old host yet. Keep them just the way it is. Okay now go change the nameserver to the new host’s. It should take about 3-10 minutes for the DNS changes to take place.

How to know if you moved?

So how do you know if you have moved successfully? Hard to tell since everything went by smooth. No one knows that you moved. No crazy downtimes! Well if you want to make sure that you moved successfully then put a little HTML fill called “test.html” (and write something like “server move test”) on your new host. And then point to www.mysite.com/test.html. If you can see the file then congrats!

See how easy it is? Now say good bye to downtimes while moving hosts!

Oh and keep the files and databases on your old host for about a week or so. Just incase something goes wrong on the new host, you can then just change the nameserver and no one will notice. Smart, huh?

There are few things that you should be aware of when you choose your web host. Whether its a free hosting service or a paid one. I think these are pretty important if you care about your site.

Paid Hosting

See if your host is reliable. Ask a few people about their service. Or you could just Google the web host’s name with a few keyword and see what comes up. You’ll probably get a few blog posts and/or forum discussions about them.

Keep in mind that you get what you paid for. If your host is giving you a great deal like 50gb of space, 100gb of bandwidth, etc and the price tag is only $3 per month. Then I think your host is overselling (its when you give people more than you can since most customers don’t use all of their resources). And they might not have a good service since their server is packed tight with a lot more users than it can handle. And if a host doesn’t make money how will they stay in business. That means that they might go out of business like a lot of web hosts. So, don’t always go with the cheapest. Look for the one which offers a reliable service at a reasonable price.

Check if they are a reseller. A reseller is someone or a host which buys a reseller plan from another host and they use the other host’s resources to provide you a web hosting service. Pretty much like pretending to be a web host. Now they might give you a good deal but their service might not be reliable. And anyone with a few extra bucks to spare per month can be a reseller. And so they might not have a good support.

See how long they have been in the business. So that the next morning you don’t wake up to find your site down and your web host gone. No refund or anything. They probably ran out of business or they ran away with your money.

Check their Terms and Conditions of Service and their policies and shit. If they are overselling and you use up like 60-90% of your resources then they might close your account and give you some bullshit reason. Why? Because if you use all of your resources then there will be a shortage on the server. Since they rely on resources that have not been used by other customers.

Good support? Check for that. You need a good reliable support. And before you actually buy one of their hosting plans go chat with the sales rep (if they have a live chat) or email them and see if they are nice and if they type in a formal way or like “ok. we;ll do dat. dont worry about that.” or like “Yes. Sure we can do that for you.”

Free Hosting

See if they have support. Like even a support forum where the users pretty much help each other.

I know a guy who had a pretty successful forum and the web host downloaded his database and forum files. And made a clone of his forum and redirected the traffic from the real forum to the clone. And he could have sold the forum database to people (yeah there are people who buy them).

Reliable? Check for that. You don’t want your site to be down all the time.

So, that’s it for now. I might later make a list of good hosting deals. Both free and paid.
