Road to Success on the Web

I realized this and thought that it would be something good to share with the rest of us. Well actually I knew it before but I just remembered this. Now everyone thinks that the web is the only way or at least one of the ways to get rich soon. Now I am not talking about any “get rich quick” scheme or something. I’m talking about people making all kinds of sites, thinking that it will get popular and they would earn tons from that site.

Okay so almost everyone wants to build a site like MySpace or Facebook. Yeah I agree that those sites are really popular, but how can you be so sure that your site will also get that popular. The thing is that Facebook got lucky. Yeah it started as a small social network site for students of Harvard University and then it got opened to public. And it grew pretty fast. But, then again sites like Friendster was once really popular and now they pretty much died. Why? New social networks with a few more features killed it. Well look at MySpace, it used to be really popular and now its slowly dying. And I guess you know why.

My point is that people will make sites. There will be thousands of new sites made everyday, but only few of them will be successful. And to make sure your site is one of those successful sites, you have to make your site unique! Yeah think of something different. Don’t just think of making a video sharing site with a great look and a few extra features. Think of something that no one has thought of yet. Make like a totally unique video sharing site. Well you don’t necessarily have to make social network sites, video sharing sites, etc., you could think of a whole new kind of site. Now that should be successful, only if its good enough.

I personally think that the web is getting destroyed just like the Earth. Some people try to buy every single domain name and try to sell it for huge amount later. Making it difficult for the rest of us to get a good domain name. Plus I hate those instant forum building sites (the kind of sites that allow you to make a forum in a few clicks). Because they are just helping people build trash. Now come on get real, who is going to use a forum which has a URL like http://myforum.phpbb.company.com or http://company.com/myforum and first of all, most people would probably have a hard time remembering the URLs. I don’t know what else to say.

My advice is to be unique. Be unique and you will be successful. Oh and you also have to get lucky sometimes. But if you something really great your site will be successful, sooner or later. And keep it simple!
