What You Should Submit to Digg

Hmm so I thought why not post a little guide about what people should submit to Digg. This should give you an idea of what kind of topics work best on Digg. And you might wanna check out my beginner’s guide to Digg.

Well you need to keep in mind that not everyone on Digg is going to like your submission. That’s how you get buried. Duh! Okay lets move on. No more noobish stuff.

1. Something hilarious

Everyone likes to laugh. If you can make them laugh, you’ve got their digg. Most of us have a short attention span (or we’re just busy). So, a funny picture would be perfect. Takes a few seconds to look at and figure out what’s going on (unless you’re a blonde, of course).

And what about videos? I’m not too sure about that. You would need to have something unique then. Like the website is down, for example. Here’s another great tip. Try making fun of someone (or a group). Everyone loves a racist joke (but most people have a hard time admitting it). Just don’t go all Nazi.

2. Breaking news (or just news)

Digg is the best social bookmarking site for news. Got something great to share? Do it ASAP. A submission with a headline like “McCain becomes President. WTF?! How?” would be perfect.

Now only submit news that will help people. Or at least the ones we’re interested in and try to stick to subjects like the web, tech, gaming and Digg itself. Oh and try to submit “bad” news because it travels faster and further.

3. Controversial

Make people argue. You need to make them shout. Make them go angry. Make them say “you’re wrong! I’m right! Digg is better than Reddit!”. Getting any ideas? Things like “McDonalds vs Burger King” will work well. Like comparing things and being neutral (no buries that way).

But, keep in mind that this doesn’t always work. So good luck! And let me know how this went.

4. Guides, tips, helpful things, etc

The subheading says it all. Help them and they’ll help you. Teach them something interesting. For example a guide on how to install Linux. Well maybe that won’t be extremely helpful, but you get the idea. A guide on how to make Vista use less RAM would be great. Just keep it unique and new.

Update: Another reason you shouldn’t blog when you’re really, really tired. Actually you can only submit those 4 topics to digg. But, everything wasn’t a complete BS. #1 & #2 works great. Try those two.

Yep that’s it. I hope this was helpful to you. A mixture of the right topic, loyal digg buddies and luck will take you to the front page. And let me know which one works the best for you.

The Best Days to Submit to Digg

Guess what? I was doing some research and I found some pretty interesting stuff. Your chance to get on Digg’s front page. I’m going to pin-point the the best days of the week to make a submission on Digg.

The Lucky 3 Days

Lets call it the “lucky 3 days”. It’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These are the days where you could get on Digg’s front page a bit easily and stay there longer than usual.

  • Friday – People are tired. They want some rest. Some have plans for the night. And therefore, there’s a bit less activity on Digg. There are still a bunch of users, but not as much as on weekdays.
  • Saturday – Digg is completely dead. I’m not joking. Submissions with only 150 diggs get on the front page and they stay there for a few extra hours since there’s not a lot of users digging and submitting stuff.
  • Sunday – Not as dead as Saturdays, but still. You’re not gonna stay on the front page as long as you would on Saturday though.

There is a catch!

Sorry I didn’t mean to ruin it for you, but you need to know something else too. I did mention that Digg goes pretty much dead on the lucky 3 days, right? That means most users will be offline. So, who’s going to digg your stuff then? Yeah that’s the horrible little catch.

Okay here’s the deal. You need to have a bunch of loyal friends on Digg. Plan to stay on the computer and digg each other’s stuff. You need to get around 150-200 diggs on average. These are just estimates, of course. But, you get the idea.

Do you think you can manage to do that? If you can then maybe you’ll get to the holy front page. And if you’re wondering about the traffic then don’t worry about it. You’ll get pretty much the same amount of traffic. Maybe not the same digg effect that fries your server, but still, it’s pretty good.

Go ahead and give it a shot this week. Let us know if it worked for you or not. And good luck!

Your First Guide To Digg

Last night I was working on th13rteen.com. I’ll be linking to all my sites and social networking site accounts from there. Its not really done yet. Okay moving on. Today I’ll be giving you your first guide to Digg. This will teach you all the basics and hopefully, help you reach the front page.

Things you’ll learn

These are the things I’ll be talking about. These are the basics and you need to know these. If you can become a pro at these few things then you’ll reach the front page one day.

1. Add friends on Digg

2. Digg other’s stuff

3. Get to know the diggers

4. Now submit yours and spread the word

1. Add friends on Digg

Digg - Add FriendsOkay you just joined Digg. Now you need to start adding some friends. See if anyone you know is using Digg. Add them. Go to the front page, go to the profile of the users that submitted the stories and add them as friends. And also add some of their friends as your friend.

Now you should have a bunch people on Digg. And don’t forget to add me.

2. Digg other’s stuff

Don’t just expect everyone to help you. You need to do something for them first. Digg their shit! Diggers will shout to you requesting diggs on a particular submission (and sometimes on a few). Digg it for them and shout back saying that you dugg it. This is how you make a nice Digg buddy. Moving on to #3.

3. Get to know the diggers

People aren’t just going to help out random people. Sometimes they do. Most of the time they don’t. If they knew you then they would obviously digg your stuff more. So, you need to go and add your “digg buddies” on MSN.

Also add random diggers. See who’s digging your articles and check if anyone dugg a lot of your stuff. Shout to them and just say hi and ask them to add you on MSN or whatever IM you use. Some diggers also leave their email addresses on their profile (so check for that first).

4. Now submit yours and spread the word

Digg - Share with friendsYeah its time for you to make submissions. So, do that and then share it with your friends (there is a button for that). Write something nice and convincing (so that people digg it). And don’t forget to ask your Digg buddies (on MSN) to digg it. They’ll do it for sure (since you’ve been so helpful to them). And if you think your article is great then ask your buddies to share it with their friends.

One more thing. Only submit your masterpiece and send one shout per day. There are people on Digg that send out requests for diggs like 5-6 times a day. Now that’s just annoying. I usually ignore these people (and I’m sure most of us do the same). Just remember not to bug anyone on Digg!

That’s it for now guys. And let us know how this went and also if you have any tips.

My Secret to Blogging Consistency

Do you blog? Do you sleep at night? Do you wake up in the morning? Do you get distracted easily? Do you want to be a successful blogger? Do you want to rule the blogosphere? Do you think John Chow’s face looks like a monkey’s ass?

If you answered yes to any of those questions then you have “blogarogetize”. Don’t worry about the medical term. Let me put it in simple words for you. It means that you sometimes run out of things to blog about. I’m a trained professional you can count on me! Let me tell you how you can blog daily and not run out of things to write about. This is how I do it.

Make a list! Yes, a list!

There I said it. The secret to blogging consistency. Just jot down whatever comes to your mind. Like whatever you find interesting. Any interesting site, software, issues, etc. You could write it down or type it on Notepad. Do whatever you need to. And take your time! It’s really important that you take your time. Don’t rush!

Just listen to music for a few minutes. Or watch a comedy stand-up or any funny video. That should clear up your mind and then start jotting things down.

Why do this?

I get a lot of ideas and I forget some. Like c`mon. There’s just so many things going on the web and in the tech world. How many things can you remember? Making a list helps. It helps a lot. Trust me, hommes. Later you can just go through the list and pick the most interesting topic. This is how you prevent “blogarogetize”.

UPDATE: How often you should do it?

You should try to do this every day. Or at least every other day. Don’t do it weekly because by that time I would probably forget a few things (at least I would). And keep the list around you all the time. Especially when you’re on the computer. If you find anything interesting, quickly add it. Don’t wait!

How I make the list?

I do it at night. Midnight actually. I take a pen and paper. Sit down. And just jot down things that I thought of writing about the other day and what I found interesting today. Last night I made a list of 10 topics. Not bad, huh?

Like yesterday, I saw this post on Lifehacker about Live Mesh and I got interested in blogging about it. I quickly added that to my list. You get the idea, right?

Oh and a few other things I think I should mention. I don’t listen to music while doing this and I go into semi-yoga mode while doing this (meaning there are no distractions while I’m making the list).

Your Turn! Got any secrets like this?

Got any cool (or weird) blogging consistency secrets like this? Oh c`mon I know you have something. Share it with us! Don’t be shy.

Viva la blogging consistency! Later folks and have a nice weekend.

Making Money From A Post2Host

Hey guys. Its been a wonderful launch. I made one post and got some pretty decent amount of traffic from Digg. Thanks for all the support. Appreciate it! Okay so today let me tell you how you can make some money from a post2host without really investing much.

First let me tell you what a post2host is. Well its a type of free hosting service where you need to make a certain amount of posts on the forum every month in order to keep your free hosting account. Get it? Okay so lets start!

Getting Started

You first need to go look for a cheap reseller hosting. You’ll find tons out there. Go look on DigitalPoint forums for some good deals. Try not to spend more than $10 per month. And also look for some good features like cPanel, FFmpeg, etc. These extra features will act as a magnet.

Now you need to setup a forum. I would suggest using phpBB, SMF or any other free forum software. vBulletin is probably the best forum software but its pretty expensive and the idea is to invest almost nothing. Using a nulled one wouldn’t be a good idea since they will hunt you down and close your site. Its just not worth the hassle.

Get some friends who know about hosting. Ask them to become admins or moderators. You’ll need support. You can’t keep the forum running all by yourself. And you need them from Day 1. Plus make sure that they help you promote it.

Don’t forget a nice domain name. That is really important. So now you can start your forum. First few days you’ll need to do some crazy marketing. And also you guys will need to fill the forum up with some threads. Oh and use cP Creator to automatically open hosting accounts, keep count of posts, etc. Its a lot easier.

Part where the money flows in

Yep its the fun-to-read part. If you were thinking of putting up AdSense then hold that thought. Its going take you ages to make money with AdSense unless you can have a huge amount of traffic. A better idea would be private sponsors.

Edit your forum’s template and make some space for banners: 125x125px and 160x600px. Those 2 sizes should be okay. Now start by offering it for cheap. Like $5 and $10. Increase it later on when you get the forum going. Oh and you could also throw in an AdSense banner somewhere (more money that way).

So now lets say you have a good amount of members and lot of threads/posts. Its been about 6 months to a year. And you made a good amount of money from private sponsors. Now its time to sell it! Wait a sec. Make sure you have like 5000 members at least. The more members you have the better.

And before selling it, take money from people to send out mass emails to your members about the sponsor’s site or product. More money there. Cha ching! Okay that’s enough. Lets sell it already. So how would you sell it? Well go on forums like Digital Point and you’ll find people who are interested in buying your database (since it has all the users and posts). People do that to kick start their own forum.

Don’t just sell the database once. Sell it a few times. Cha ching! Cha ching! And you probably don’t wanna tell your potential buyers that you sold the same database before to a different guy. People want unique and fresh databases.

Now that’s enough. Go find a buyer that wants to buy the thing. Like the post2host service, domain, the forum, etc. Ask for a good amount. Maybe around $500 to $3000. Depending on how much traffic you get and how many active members you have.

Other Random Tips

These are just random tips that I didn’t mention above. I’ll just jot them down below. They might help you.

  • Don’t buy a VPS or a dedicated server for the forum. Start by using a free hosting service or host yourself on the reselling server.
  • Keep your forums about things related to hosting, web development, SEO, etc. So that people have things to talk about.
  • Go to related forums and post about your service. And also add you link in the forum signatures.
  • Post about the service at Digital Point, FreeWebspace.net, and other hosting related forums.
  • Control the quality of posts. You want to keep a balance between quality and quantity of posts.
  • You, yourself need to be every good with hosting stuff.
  • Provide quality support. Or else your members will get frustrated and just leave.

Hmm so that’s it for now. I’m done. I think I’ve said everything I had in mind. This should make you a few thousand dollars or more depending on how much you’ve promoted the service, how many active members you have, and how much traffic you get.

I’ll be writing about some crazy marketing tricks and you don’t wanna miss out on that. So subscribe to my feeds or subscribe via email.
