As the web gets more social our privacy does become less ensured too. I am sure you are aware of that; if not this is something you might wanna take a minute and give a small thought to.

First of all, let me start off by saying, “Whatever you don’t want the world to know, don’t put it online.” That should be the first thing in your mind when you’re concerned about your privacy. Doesn’t matter how much control a site gives you over your privacy, but always assume whatever you put out there is public information.

People have lost jobs because of what they had previously expressed online. Now that is very scary, and that should come as a warning to us. Just because we are behind a screen that should not mean that we should feel free to speak whatever we please.

One site where I recommend always staying on top of privacy settings is Facebook. That’s the place where anyone can see what you’ve been upto by viewing your pictures, videos, status updates and wall posts. Do make sure you that you have revoked permissions to 3rd party applications that you no longer have a use for. That is very important because we do not know what these people are doing with our info.

After all, it is your responsibility to be updated on privacy issues and setting on whatever platform you are using. Be smart and be safe as the web gets smaller and more connected.

Twitter does give us the ability to know who retweeted us, but what about favourites? They forgot about that one – at least for now. But, that’s why I love 3rd party applications. They add all these nifty little features that the site forgot or didn’t bother looking into.

Right so you wanna know who faved your tweets and what’s your most popular one? Alright I know of two sites, but the one I always use and is my own personal favourite is Favstar.fm.

Not only can you look into the stats of your tweets, but you can also see which tweets are the most popular ones on the timeline right now on Twitter. And to be honest, some of these Tweets on the leaderboard are absolutely hilarious, so no wonder they were faved so many times.

So, head over to Favstar.fm and jump into action by signing into your Twitter via oAuth – no worries, it is safe since oAuth does not give away your password to the 3rd party application, but only allows access to your account.

Pro Tip: If you have a loyal following on Twitter then tweet up something impressive and try to get on Favstar.fm’s leaderboard, and you maybe surprised by the number of new followers you have gained at the end of the day.

I like to stay on top of things. I wanna know everything I could possibly know about my followers, my tweets, my profile and how its affecting my Twitter account in general. There’s a lot of sites and tools you could use to stay updated, but these are the few that I use on a daily basis.

1. Twitalyzer

Twitalyzer tells you everything that you possibly need to know about your account. I don’t even know where to start. These are seriously detailed analytics for social media experts.

Twitalyzer connects with your account (don’t worry, it’s safe) and then starts analyzing how you and your followers are engaging. It gives you a 30 day average of these following stats: Impact, Engagement, Influence, Clout, Generosity, Velocity, Signal, Klout Score, Retweeted, Retweeting, Retweets, Retweet Ratio, Referenced, Referencing, References, Reference Ratio, Followers, Following, Lists and Updates.

And there’s just way more. It tells you a bit about your tweeting personality, makes recommendations to you, allows you to create goals for yourself, and lets you explore your network with a visual map. Definitely give this tool a shot.

2. ReFollow

I like to keep my timeline as clean and as helpful as possible. That means I’m always following and unfollowing. It sometimes just gets very difficult to keep track of. But, that’s where Refollow comes in. They call it the “Twitter relationship manager.”

I hate following inactive accounts, accounts without a profile picture and accounts that mass follow back. With the help of Refollow I can point out those accounts and easily unfollow them with a few clicks. And what I love most about this tool is the bulk follow or unfollow capability. (Unfollow all of them ungrateful people.)

3. Twitter Counter

Twitter Counter isn’t something that is essential for your Twitter analytics, but its sort of a fun tool to play with. It graphs out your number of followers (or following or tweets or even all) over a period of one week, one month or 3 months. It also predicts the number of followers you would have in X number of days, and sometimes the predictions do come true. Weird.

4. TweetEffect

Ever wondered what kinda tweets are working with your followers? Well TweetEffect will pass that info along to you. It lists all your recent tweets and shows which ones caused you to gain or lose followers.

And before you start using TweetEffect, please do keep in mind that it is still in its beta stages and I am not quite sure how effective this tool is.

5. Twit Cleaner

There’s the user who’s constantly trying to sell something, the user who’s always doing shoutouts, the user who’s tweeting nothing but links, the user who hasn’t posted in ages and the user who hardly interacts. I wanna unfollow all of them! Thank you, Twit Cleaner.

Did I forget one?

Did I forget to mention a site that you love with all your heart? Well please do feel free to share it with us by dropping the link off in the comments section and telling us a little about it.

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet. – Shakespeare

Seriously though what is in a name? Does such a small thing matter? Yes and no.

Look around. Its a very busy world. Ads all over. TV, radio, internet, newspaper, magazine and what not. What do they all have in common? Short, simple, catchy phrases. Do you know where I’m heading with this?

Now before we even start with having a little catchy tagline for your site or blog, we’ll have to deal with the name. So, yes names do matter (especially on the web) unless you would rather listen to the ancient playwright.

I personally have a hard time finding a decent name. I keep changing my mind more than I change gears while driving standard. A true fact. And I honestly know how hard it is when you finally find the perfect name only to find out the domain is taken.

Alright lets assume you have a domain and you’ve got a better one to work with. Now what? The fear of losing traffic and SEO. Well no worries. You can always do a 301 redirect using .htaccess.

Open up Notepad, paste the following and upload it to your root directory. It works like magic.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yournewdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Now its very important that you make sure that this file is named .htaccess (no extentions like .txt or anything). And lets just hope this time you’ve picked a better domain.

There are tons of ways to put your site under the spotlight. People come up with new ideas all the time. But, I just saw a really one. Its called “pissing-off-the-owner-of-a-huge-blog.”

I’m sure you all heard of Mashable. Its the 11th most popular blog on the web according to Technorati. They get over a million unique visitors per month (don’t worry, I did my research). And they have a shit load of subscribers. They’re almost as big as TechCrunch.

Well anyway, some smart ass made a social network for music and named it Moshable. They just jacked the name from Mashable. Well the folks at Mashable got pissed and they blogged about it. And guess what happened? Traffic wave! Nice one, Moshable.

Its a good idea, but it might not work all the time. You need to look for a blogger that would whine like a lil’ bitch. Some bloggers couldn’t care less. Like this guy made Live Crunch and TechCrunch didn’t give a shit (epic fail!). Or maybe the guy just lacks creativity.

So, do your research and find a good target. And don’t just do what the people at Moshable did. Find other (and better) ways to piss off A-list bloggers (without of course, doing anything that could get you in legal shit). Here’s a tip, try fucking with Darren Rowse the “ProBlogger”.

Yeah you gotta backup your sites and you have to do it properly. You need to do more than just saving it on your computer. I’ll tell you how I do it.

Making the backup

I download all the files and databases to your computer.

I zip everything and put a password on it. I use WinRAR to do this.

Name the .zip file to something like “wr_oct-5.zip”. (Make sure you have the date on it!)

I make sure that the .zip file isn’t corrupted by unzipping it and checking if everything is there.

Storing the backup

The biggest mistake I ever made was keeping all the backups on my laptop only and forgetting that someone could steal my laptop or my hard drive could crash. Please don’t do that or else you’ll get fucked! Trust me!

I started putting my backups on three different places. This way I’m safe if something goes wrong.

My server: Yes, my server itself. I make a folder where I just keep all the backups. Make sure you keep this folder at the root of your server where it can’t be accessed by the public.

On a CD: The old school way! I have a bunch of blank disks lying around, so why not burn the backups on it? Plus its not that expensive to buy blank CDs. Or if you want, you can just put them on a pen drive.

Online storage: I put one more copy on Windows Live SkyDrive. Don’t just trust any site with your precious little backups! Meaning don’t use shit like RapidShare and Megaupload.

How often do I backup?

The best way would be to backup everyday. But, that’s not possible. I’m just way too lazy to do that. I try to do it weekly. And sometimes randomly when I feel like doing it.

Some shared hosts back your stuff up daily, so consider yourself lucky if you’re on a shared hosting.

How about YOU?

Tell us how you do it! I wanna know how often you do it, where you store it and if you have any suggestions for us.
