What is Web 2.0?
2 Oct
I am pretty sure that 50% of the people who use internet doesn’t know what Web 2.0 is. It’s something that doesn’t have a definition. It is more of a concept. I’ll give a shot at explaining what that is. Web 2.0 is basically the next-level of web applications, websites, graphics and everything that can be related to a website.
Websites which are Web 2.0 is simple, user-friendly, have a nice color scheme and have really cool graphics (icons, buttons, banners, etc). The graphics are glossy, fonts are simple, has shiny floor effect or reflections and most of all they are simple, but looks amazing. And Web 2.0 sites or applications use AJAX because of its ability to make websites or applications look more real, fast and unique. AJAX is just amazing and it’s better than JavaScript because JavaScript needs the browser to have it enabled or else it won’t work while AJAX just works on independently.
Web 2.0 is really hard to explain and it’s not a new standard or something! It’s just a name for a timespan (like the stone age lol). I’m not sure if I could explain what Web 2.0 is. But, I’m pretty sure some people will understand what that is. Well there’s Web 3.0 on its way!

I get it now. So basically Web 2.0 is like an era, or an evolutionary step in webdesign. Sites are becoming application-driven and ergonomically-pleasing to the eyes. Lol a great example is this site, which I believe is using WordPress and has an easy-to-use/easy-on-the-eyes theme.
I think most people are starting to catch up with the Web 2.0 concept, from webdesign newbies to professionals alike. The only group of people that I know that still have yet to appreciate the Web 2.0 concept are the general users of MySpace. Lol the amount of nasty-looking profiles is unbelievably absurd.
Yeah you got it right. Well there is a lot of sites out there which is really ugly and if I hit one of those sites then I immediately close the page (it’s weird! lol).
20% of the sites are Web 2.0 and other 80% has a mixture of sites that are ok, good and sites from the stone age (i mean the ugly ones).
Honestly, i only know the definition of Web 2.0 in design only, coz i of my fren is a graphic designer.
From what i see, most of the sites are not fully Web 2.0. I mean, they have glossy graphics, but still, it is hard browse around in the site.
Some of them uses AJAX, but thier site is damn ugly.
1 example of website which is using AJAX and looks ugly is google. lol
Well yeah you have to have a good designer to make it Web 2.0. I think that Google needs a major redesigning. Now Apple’s site is cool.
so, apple’s site consider as Web 2.0 style?
anyway, i dun think google will redesign their site into heavy graphics, coz this will make their server more heavy load.
they r actually sacrifice their layout to safe more bandwidth so that the server load more smooth.
anyway, i think u have missed out 1 thing, CSS is also a component in Web 2.0.
Yeah Apple’s site is considered to be Web 2.0. Well Google could do redesign their logo and could use the magic of CSS to make the sites look better.
Oh yeah, CSS is the basic building block. lol
Web 3.0 is very nearly already here, it seems; it’s the new buzz – see this here artcicle which is almost 2 years old. Soon, we’ll be on to Web 27435449052068.0, probably. But whatever happened to Web 2.1?
It seems that no-one’s really sure about what “Web 2.0″ means. But I think it’s kind of about user-generated content, and shiny web designs seem to go with it too.
I remember google.com added some shiny gradients a while back, which were of the “Web 2.0 style”. But then they vanished soon after.
Well it’s not sure if Web 3.0 is here. I would say that it’s still Web 2.0. There is no such thing as Web 3.0 right now.
Gmail’s logo is a good example of Web 2.0 logos. Web 2.0 doesn’t necessarily have to be glossy all the time. Maybe it’s a little hard to understand. lol
Hi guyz, I think you have misinterpreted the concept of web 2.0. This is true web 2.0 sites are a lot user friendly and contains cool graphics. But it is not the main purpose of giving it a new name. This second generation web sites are mean to connect people to the internet. If you see closely to web 1.0 sites, you are only able to read the information from them. But there is no way you can improve that information unless contacting by e-mail. Suppose this blog is a web 2.0 technology not because of it’s cool design (the design is pretty nice btw
), but because of this post comment option. You may ask me thousands of questions about how this and that is web 2.0. And this is the most confusing side. Web 2.0 can not be explained by a definition. You have to study case by case. One very old web 2.0 site is amazon.com. It is an online store, what is there to be web 2.0? Well! You can write your review on the products. And thus you are actually improving the information. Wikipedia is a wonderful web 2.0 example. How about google? Each time you search for anything, and you go to a certain site, google store that information in it’s database, and next time if there is any other user look for same information, it shows the sites you visited (or most visited against that key word) on the top. That is how you are actually improving google’s performance. I believe you will come out of the misconceptions about web 2.0 you have. How about web 3.0? This is pretty interesting. It is the ability of machine-machine interaction. Yeah, this means web 3.0 sites can communicate each other. They have some other features as well. But that will be another topic to cover. See you around till then!
Well yes it is true that Web 2.0 sites have improved communication systems and allow visitors to interact. Like before people had personal sites and now they have blogs where the visitors can post comments.
Web 2.0 is nearly immposible to explain. Its something that you have to understand all by ourself. Web 3.0 will be sematic web where its more complex and more 3D, etc.
I wouldn’t consider Amazon, Google and Wikipedia Web 2.0. Because they might have advanced technology working on them, but they don’t have the graphics of Web 2.0. But, I get where you’re coming from.
A feature which is seen in web 2.0 web sites is improved graphics design (which is exactly not web designing, but graphics designing.. you may call it graphics 2.0 if you want). Graphics design is not the reason for calling a site web 2.0 enabled. The fact is google, amazon are of web 2.0 technology. Web 2.0 is very established concept. It is not true that it does not have clear definition. The definition can not be given in short words (it is more of a concept than a difinition). The first line from wikipedia about web 2.0 is “Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second generation of web-based communities and hosted services ? such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies ? which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.”
The technology you are talking about what google, amazon or your site got is the web 2.0 technology.
You can follow the wikipedia link to read more. or if you want, the guy who created the language PHP (Rasmus) is in ottawa right now. He came today from illois and leaving for california tomorrow. You may ask him by tomorrow for better clarification.
Yeah I totally agree that Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. are using Web 2.0 technology, but Web 2.0 is not just about new technologies but also great visuals using graphics and CSS. But, I won’t say that your concept is wrong because it is quite true.
Well thats okay, not really interested in meeting Ramus. lol
